Hi everyone, my name is Kali Cox I am the owner and groomer of Kalico Luxury Dog Spa. I have been grooming 8 years and decided to open up my own salon! I have a black lab named Moonshine and a beagle mix named Toodle, who you might see around and they are friendly so say hey! We are a 1 on 1 establishment and try to make each pup comfortable and have a fear free experience! We try to make each pup love the grooming experience! No scary kennels here we are cage free!
I am PetTech safety and CPR certified and will continue to renew my certification! I regularly go to grooming shows and take courses to better help my grooming career and improve my knowledge in the industry. I love learning about new techniques, information on new styles of grooming, taking seminars, certification classes, and finding new and improved products to use on your fur babies to give them the best of the best!

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
This all depends on what breed of dog you have! Short haired dogs like beagles, pit bulls, labs, etc you would use a rubber curry brush or a shedding blade. longer haired dogs like shih tzu's, yorkies, Maltese, etc you would need a metal greyhound comb, and slicker brush. for golden retrievers, boarder collies, huskies, etc you would want an undercoat rake, metal comb, slicker brush. For poodles, doodles, etc you would want a metal comb, doodle slicker brush, demoting rake.
So what is matting- it is when the dead fur gets knotted and tangled up around itself and the live fur. think about human hair if you don't brush your hair everyday you get knots its the same type of thing. How to stop matting is to brush your dogs fur daily and throughly. Matting is painful it can cause bruising on the skin, severe irritation, hematomas to form mainly on ears, if severe enough sometimes amputation occurs due to no blood flow/circulation to the matted area like feet, tails, ears.
For doodles, poodles, yorkies, shih tzu's, maltese, goldens, huskies etc. anything with longer hair like that you need to brush daily or every other day to keep matting out. Short haired dogs can go longer because the hair will not get matted once a week to once every 2-3 weeks or as needed
For short hair dogs who do NOT need a haircut they should be bathed once a month. For haircut dogs depending on how much you want to brush you need to get them groomed every 4 weeks, 6 weeks, or 8 weeks.
Dogs in our area should be on preventatives year round due to the climate here it doesn't get cold enough in the winter to kill the fleas and ticks. The age is dependent on which preventative you choose and will be on the label or consult your vet.
Lots of dogs can have allergies to many things just like humans, it could be to certain foods- chicken, beef, environmental factors-pollen, grass, dust, scents, dyes, could have dry skin like dandruff. If you notice your dog being itchy and scratching a lot it is always good to talk to your vet about it and see what can be done. Sometimes a simple moisturizing shampoo and conditioner can work, adding in fish oil, coconut oil to the food can help as well.
There's not too much you can do for tear stains but somethings are using distilled water for drinking, wiping under the eyes daily with warm water, angel eyes can help sometimes or shaving the stained area.
Anal glands are two fluid filled sacs on each side of a dogs anus these scars are filled up by fatty acids, diamines, scent markers etc. which produce the brown oily substance that comes out. Anal glands sometimes have to be expressed monthly it really depends on the dog. Bigger dogs tend to do it themselves, where as smaller dogs need to have it done for them. There's two ways it can be done internally by a vet and externally what I do. Normally when dogs need it they will start scooting their butts on the ground, licking and bitting at their butts, and leakage can occur and you will smell a fishy pungent odor.
